Communities around the country are increasingly using TNR as the preferred method of cat control. Here, we examine the best medical practices for TNR, starting from the moment of capture through the time of release. Some of these steps will likely be performed by trappers and caregivers, others by the veterinarians performing the examinations, vaccinations, and surgeries.

In 1997, a nonprofit shelter with an annual intake of approximately 12,500 domestic animals and a contract to provide animal control for a county of approximately 700,000 people took on a large-scale hoarding case. Approximately 240 goats were confiscated and held long-term, at the shelter and in several leased rural locations in the county.

The big event for Larimer Humane Society (LHS) on Saturday, June 9, was supposed to be a dog-friendly 5K walk/run fundraiser and pet expo at a local park.

Stephanie Ashley, marketing and community outreach program manager for the nonprofit shelter in northern Colorado, got up that morning and helped with the event. “As we’re packing up and leaving,” she recalls, “we see this huge plume of smoke. And all of us just looked at each other like, ‘That’s not good.’”

While my husband and I were living and working in Vietnam, I rescued Com Tam (which means “broken rice” in Vietnamese) at an animal control facility in Saigon. At this facility, the sickly stray dogs are killed; the healthy ones are scheduled to be sent to the market to be sold for meat.
